A project called the iShack or improved shack has been implemented with the aim of bringing a better life to all South African informal settlements by way of solar panels. A model of this iShack has been designed and placed for view in a nearby settlement outside Stellenbosch.
Its design consists of a photovoltaic panel on the roof that gives power to three lights, a motion sensitive outside light and a cellphone charger. Further aiding in keeping temperatures down are the walls built from clay and hay.
Extra features are an extra long roof results in rain water being able to be collected and the placement of windows for good air circulation. As more than half of South Africa’s population live in informal settlements with no running water or electricity, the iShack will prove to assist in their standard of life in a great way.
